The Florida Department of Health in Duval County is closing its COVID-19 testing site, even as more people get sick.

The department says fewer people are getting tested at the Joseph Lee Center on the Northside. More are opting for at-home tests or going through their doctors, a spokeswoman said.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention rates Duval County as high-risk for COVID-19, based on the number of new cases, hospitalizations and occupied hospital beds.

COVID-19 cases have increased 62% in Duval over the past two weeks, to an average of 319 per day, according to tracking by the New York Times.

Nineteen percent of people tested are positive for the virus. The pandemic is considered under control at a positivity rate of 5% or below.

The last day for testing the Joseph Lee Center, 5120 Perry St., will be June 30.

City-run COVID testing and vaccine sites will continue to operate. Those sites include the Clanzel T. Brown Community Center on Moncrief Road, the Lane Wiley Senior Center on Wiley Road, and Telescope Health at 450 Atlantic Boulevard.
