The story is all too familiar, but thankfully not fatal this time: A child accesses a gun and it goes off, resulting in injuries to two young boys Sunday in their apartment on San Pablo Road, Jacksonville police said.
In the last two years, Jacksonville has seen at least 11 accidental shootings involving juveniles, five of whom died and one as recent as three months ago, according to Times-Union records using police notifications and reports.
Jacksonville accounts for over half of the nine statewide juvenile deaths in that same span due to accidentally discharging a firearm, according to the Florida Department of Children and Families and The Times-Union. (Note, however, that many other cases are still being investigated).
