The Southern Roots Filling Station will say farewell on Saturday after eight years at its storefront at 1275 King St.
In a Facebook post, owners Mariah Goelz and husband Juan Pablo “JP” Salvat say the hardest decision they have ever made is to close the popular vegan restaurant. But due to the uncertainty of issues about their rent and the current landlord, and the inability to get more answers, they write that they are “worn out” from so many unknowns.
Southern Roots opened its King Street location in November 2014, after starting as a pop-up at farmers’ markets three years earlier. It expanded into the storefront next door with an espresso bar.
Southern Roots owners did not want to speak about the closure, which will come at the end of business on Saturday. But the recent rent issues cropped up when their lease expired a year ago, according to the Florida Times-Union.
The couple will continue to operate Paco’s Coffee Roasters at 565 King St., as well as Cultivate Jax, their neighborhood urban supply store at 2766 Park St.
