A second arrest has been made in the shooting nearly three months ago of 13-year-old Prince Holland, killed as he was being driven home from football tryouts, police said.
Kentrevious Tyree Garard, 25, is behind bars on charges of second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder and shooting deadly missiles, Sheriff T.K. Waters said during a news conference Monday.
“A significant domino has fallen in the quest for justice for Prince Holland," Waters saide. "Because this is an ongoing investigation, there is very little that I can share about the facts and circumstances of this case. But what I can tell you, however, is that Garard was the trigger puller in this case.”
The SUV that Prince was in was hit in a 6:30 p.m. barrage of bullets at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 3 in the 5700 block of Moncrief Road, police said. An 11-year-old boy with him was injured, as was the 21-year-old driver, believed to be a coach, police said.
Two other boys in the SUV, ages 14 and 15, were uninjured, according to News4Jax, a WJCT News partner.
Their SUV was stopped at an intersection a mile from The Legends Center on Soutel Drive, where the victim had tried out for football
Homicide detectives discovered the victims’ vehicle had been "actively pursued by another vehicle" just before the shooting. According to Johnson's arrest report, the other vehicle pulled up next to the SUV, and one person inside "indiscriminately opened fired into the victims’ vehicle."
During the news conference, Assistant State Attorney Lee Hutton called it a “targeted murder.”
The first arrest was 22-year-old Marcel Joshua Johnson on Jan. 9, charged with murder and four more charges of attempted murder. Waters said Monday that Johnson was driving the vehicle that was pursuing the SUV.
As for more suspects, Waters said they will look, but feel they are “close to the end of it.”
