Rally planned Friday in Jacksonville to condemn gun violence

Florida State University News

A rally Friday in Jacksonville will honor those whose lives have been lost or changed by gun violence.

The most recent mass shooting in Florida occurred on Memorial Day, when nine people were wounded after gunfire erupted on the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk, sending people running for cover.

Katie Hathaway with Moms Demand Action on Gun Sense in America says mass shootings represent just the tip of the iceberg of gun violence:

“We have about 400 million guns in this country, and instances of daily gun violence whether it’s community violence, domestic violence, firearms suicide or unintentional shootings," Hathaway said Thursday on First Coast Connect with Melissa Ross. "Those account for the majority of gun violence in this country.”

Friday is National Gun Violence Awareness Day. People are asked to wear orange to remember shooting victims. The rally will be at 6:30 p.m. under the Fuller Warren Bridge.

You can hear the full interview with Katie Hathaway on the First Coast Connect website.
