Longtime television meteorologist George Winterling passed away Wednesday at age 91.
Winterling served as WJXT-4′s first chief meteorologist and held the position for 47 years before retiring in 2009. He was considered a pioneer in the field of meteorology.
Winterling was the only meteorologist to forecast that Hurricane Dora would hit Northeast Florida. Dora, the only hurricane to directly hit our area, rolled ashore north of St. Augustine as a Category 2 storm on Sept. 10, 1964.
