Ocean waves batter St. Augustine during a storm.

St. Johns County residents seeking federal help to raise their homes above storm flooding will have multiple options in the next few weeks.

The county and city of St. Augustine have set outreach meetings for later this month and early August from Ponte Vedra Beach to City Hall.

The meetings are open to residents interested in participating in the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Flood Mitigation Assistance Program. Each one will include presentations, with question sessions and one-on-one discussions with the consultant.

The FEMA grant program is a nationally competitive annual allocation of federal funding. FEMA gives priority to structures that face repetitive or severe loss from storms. Last year alone, more than 60 residents of St. Augustine applied for the Flood Mitigation Assistance Program, with FEMA set to announce award later this summer, city officials said.

The county's Homeowner Outreach Meeting are scheduled at these times:

  • July 31 — 2 p.m. at the Ponte Vedra Civic Association, 2724 S. Ponte Vedra Blvd.
  • August 1 — 3 p.m. at the Southeast Library Branch, 6670 U.S. 1 S., then at 6 p.m. at the Wind Mitigation Building, 3111 Agriculture Center Drive.

The city of St. Augustine's outreach meetings are at 2 p.m., and again at 6 p.m. on Aug. 2 in The Alcazar Room, St. Augustine City Hall, 75 King St.
Homeowners interested in any of the city’s flood outreach programs can send an email with their name, address and phone number to fma@citystaug.com. A member of the city staff will respond. To speak directly with a team member in advance of the workshops, email Quality Engineering and Surveying Project Coordinator Andy Daray at adaray@qesla.com.

Additional flood mitigation information and resources can be found on St. Augustine's city website.
