11/17/17: Florida Blue Bans Oxycontin, Irma Recovery, Political Commentator Van Jones

This week we’re discussing fighting the opioid crisis at Florida’s pharmacies along with paying claims and paying for cleaning up two months after Hurricane Irma. We also are looking at the opportunity and anxiety of our divided politics.

Florida Blue Makes A Move To Combat Opioid Addiction

Florida Blue, the state’s biggest health insurer, says it will not cover Oxycontin prescriptions after January 1.

Will this move make a difference in stemming the tide of opioid overdoses?

We began the Roundup by welcoming Scott McClelland, Vice President of Pharmacy for Florida Blue along with Dr. Raymond Pomm, Specialist in Addiction and Recovery and Vice President of Medical Services at River Region Human Services in Jacksonville.

Recovery From Irma Is Slow Going

As the slow recovery from Hurricane Irma drags on and families wait for temporary housing or assistance, officials around the state are urging continued persistence and patience. WGCU's Julie Glenn reported from Ft. Myers.

Jay Adams, Chief of Claims for Citizens Property Insurance and Jim Saunders from the News Service of Florida joined us to discuss the claims process.

Political Commentator Van Jones

One of the winners of the 2016 election was political commentator Van Jones. Jones has made a splash on CNN since the election of Donald Trump.

The former special adviser to the Obama White House is a popular contributor to the network, offering sharp, impassioned analysis on our divided nation.

He joined us to discuss his new book, Beyond the Messy Truth: How We Came Apart, How We Come Together.

Bill joined WJCT News in September of 2017 from The Florida Times-Union, where he served in a variety of multimedia journalism positions.
