Sulzbacher Center Opens Vets Respite Unit

Kevin Meerschaert

The Sulzbacher Center cut the ribbon on its new veterans medical respite unit on Tuesday.

The 28 bed facility will cater to homeless veterans who have been released from the hospital but still need some care to fully recover.

With the respite available, area hospitals will be able to save tax dollars by turning over the patients to Sulzbacher instead of providing indigent care.

Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown says the center provides a great service to the community.

The respite center was funded in part through a community development block grant and private donations from Bank of America, Baptist Medical Center, local residents Vince and Linda Ferrigno and an anonymous corporate foundation.

Kevin Meerschaert has left WJCT for new pursuits. He was the producer of First Coast Connect until October of 2018.
