Fog and heavy smoke from a wildfire on Pecan Park Road at Interstate-95 on Jacksonville’s Northside could continue to reduce drivers’ visibility for a few more nights.
A lightning strike started the fire four days ago.
Annaleasa Winter with the Florida Forest Service says although the fire has been contained to 86-acres of swampland, there’s still plenty of fuel left for it to burn.
Winter says the fire will continue until there is enough rain to saturate the entire fire or the pine straw and leaves have been completely consumed by the fire.
Winter said, “It’s going to continue to smoke until one of those two things occurs.”
Winter says the Florida Highway Patrol is monitoring the situation and will close that section of I-95 at Pecan Park Road if visibility on the the highway becomes too unsafe to drive overnight.
The blaze is one of eight wildfires burning in Northeast Florida.
