A 27-year veteran of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has resigned after being arrested Wednesday night for alleged fraud.
William G. Winsted, JSO’s facilities manager, was charged with a third-degree felony of organized fraud for engaging in a scheme to defraud and obtain property less than $20,000.
According to JSO Undersheriff Pat Ivey, Winstead is JSO’s second employee arrested in 2018.
A tip came in to the Integrity Unit, which sparked the investigation at the purchases made by the civilian employee, Ivey said Thursday morning.
“Some of the details given was that the blanket orders were being used to renovate, potentially renovate a home, a personal residence, and to build a deck,” Ivey said.
According to Ivey, expense reports were turned in as normal and didn’t prompt immediate attention because items like lumber and tools are also bought for the department.
