4/6/18: Midterm Elections, Guns And The Political Divide

On the statewide Roundup this week:  Two former Florida congressmen – one a Democrat and the other a Republican – joined us for a wide ranging discussion.

Guns And The Political Divide

Ten Florida cities are suing Governor Scott. They want to make their own gun laws.

The gun issue is just the latest highlighting big differences between local and state government and the political divide up and down the peninsula and across the panhandle of Florida.

Former Florida congressmen,  Republican David Jolly and Democrat Patrick Murphy, offered their insights.

Midterm Elections: A Blue Wave?

With midterm elections approaching, Republican candidates are starting to feel the effects of having a Republican president with low approval ratings.

Politico Florida shared the story this week of Republican Congressman Vern Buchanan. His district includes Bradenton and Sarasota. Buchanan is running for this 7th term in Congress.

He’s also running TV ads earlier than usual after his son, James Buchanan, lost a special election to the Florida House in February -- in an area that strongly favored Donald Trump in 2016.

Democrats see a “blue wave” coming in November as President Trump’s approval ratings flounder.

Former Miami Beach Mayor and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Philip Levine says President Donald Trump has too often worked to divide the country instead of bringing it together.

Can the country come together? What about Florida? We continued our discussion with the former congressmen.

Jolly and Murphy are on a statewide tour - mostly going to college campuses - to explain “Why Gridlock Rules Washington” and show audiences that bipartisanship is possible.
