Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has been stepping up his criticism of Disney, one of the largest businesses in Florida, as the company criticizes one of the governor’s hallmark pieces of legislation — the Parental Rights in Education bill.

The so-called “Don’t Say Gay” law bans gender identity and sexual orientation instruction for kindergarten through third graders, and it bans discussing those topics in a way that “is not age-appropriate” for any grade.

Weeks after Disney said it would not take a position on the legislation, it came out against it as employees pressured the company. Disney said the bill should never have been passed and signed into law. It said its goal is to have it repealed.

Disney had already promised to suspend making political campaign donations. Two years ago, it spent almost $5 million dollars on Florida candidates.

Diversity viewpoint surveys

A new survey is going out to students and faculty at college campuses around Florida. The state says it’s meant to measure “intellectual freedom and viewpoint diversity.”

But a faculty union representing higher education institutions is calling on students and staff to ignore the survey, saying it’s unconstitutional.

The United Faculty of Florida even says the survey poses a threat to higher education, by potentially chilling speech on campus. They’ve sued over the survey, in fact.
