The City of Jacksonville, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, JEA, the Jacksonville Transportation Authority and the Jacksonville Aviation Authority are consolidating their internet service in a move they say is expected to save the city about $200,000.
Mayor Alvin Brown and agency heads made the announcement Monday morning. The new service is provided by Florida LambdaRail, which delivers broadband service to 50 locations including Florida State College and the University of North Florida.
Mayor Brown says the switch will more than double the city’s online network capacity, moving from 355 megabytes to one gigabyte service.
"With a growing number of websites and applications helping to expand the reach of city government", Brown said,"we owe it to taxpayers to invest wisely in the most effective and efficient systems to keep everyone connected."
Brown says the expansion will also allow for faster browsing at the public computers of the Jacksonville Public Library system, which are used by many online job seekers.
The improved service is already live in Jacksonville government facilities and city a roll-out to all partner agencies is expected in the near future.
