U.S. Senator Nelson: Budget Deal A Good Sign For Congressional Action In 2014

U.S. Senator Bill Nelson of Florida said he hopes there will be more cooperation in Washington in 2014, despite it being an election year.Nelson was in Jacksonville Thursday morning to visit and help serve breakfast at the Clara White Mission.

He said the recently reached Congressional budget deal is a positive sign gridlock may be easing.

"We'll see what the test come up in January as we do something about the unemployment extension," he said. "We start to see improvements in the economy some of the things such as reform of the tax code.

"There's a lot we can do but let's see if there is a will and if there is a way."

The first year-long session of the 113th Congress set a pace for this group of lawmakers to be the least productive ever with a year punctuated by inaction and a partial federal government shutdown.

Nelson also said organizations like the Clara White Mission are important to help people who are down on their luck and need a little help to get through the day.

As the economy continues to improve, Nelson said the work of non-profits like the mission is important to help those who are still looking for jobs.

About 400 meals are served every day at the mission, which also includes a veterans services center.

One gentleman named Albert said he comes to the mission on a regular basis for breakfast.

He said he's thankful the services that are provided for the poor and homeless in Jacksonville.
