A recent University of North Florida poll showed some interesting early numbers in this year's upcoming gubernatorial election. Former Republican Governor Charlie Crist, now running as a Democrat, has a very slim lead over incumbent Republican Governor Rick Scott, just one point, in the latest poll.
About 45 percent of registered Florida voters polled say they approve of the job Scott is doing as governor.
Also, 74 percent of those polled say they’d vote yes to legalize medical marijuana.
UNF pollster and assistant professor Mike Binder joined Melissa Ross for a closer look at what the numbers reveal.
Binder said among the most revealing results is that it seems like voters aren't overwhelmingly enthusiastic about either Scott or Crist right now, leaving the door open for aggressive campaigning by both parties.
"I suspect once the (legislative) session closes in early May that this thing is really going to kick off into high gear," Binder said.
One big question for Crist will be how the state's Democratic base will respond to his campaign.
"Will they get excited? Will they go out and get their friends to donate money? Will they go out and knock on doors on Saturdays and Sundays and in the evenings? That's the real question, and it's yet to be answered," Binder said.
Asked about the results on medical marijuana, Binder said the support shouldn't have been surprising.
"The country is very supportive of this," Binder said. "These numbers are in line with polls nationally, they're in line with polls in other states."
