U.S. Navy Assistant Secretary Sean Stackley and Florida Congressman Ander Crenshaw were in Jacksonville Tuesday on a fact-finding mission.

The two visited Naval Station Mayport to assess current ship repair operations and to get an idea of what’s needed in the future when Mayport is home to more and bigger ships.

Stackley says the workload will be substantial.

“Everybody here is well familiar with the three ship amphibious ready group," he said. "The New York is here in home port. We’ve got Fort McHenry and Iwo Jima coming later on this year, a significant increase in terms of not simply ship count but those are large ships.”

After a tour of Mayport, Stackley and Congressman Crenshaw sat down with members of the Jacksonville Beach Chamber of Commerce and the Jacksonville Area Ship Repair Association.
