A day after Republicans wrapped up their national convention in Cleveland, presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton is expected to announce her vice presidential running mate.
The possible declaration is part of a short campaign barnstorm of the Sunshine State.
Lisa King is a Hillary Clinton Delegate from Jacksonville and regional director for the campaign in North Florida. She told WJCT Clinton will announce soon and most likely in Florida.
“There’s not an official statement, but I can tell you I heard rumors from the inside that the announcement would be in Tampa today. But then yesterday I heard it was going to be Miami on Saturday,” King said.
According to the Associated Press, Virginia Senator Tim Kaine and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack are listed as likely “safe” choices for Clinton. Those names have prompted criticism from some progressives who say choosing the more conservative democrats prove Clinton isn't serious about winning the votes of Bernie Sanders supporters.
But King said those aren't the only names she’s been hearing on the ground.
“I wouldn't rule out other candidates,” she said. “I am still hearing late rumors from within the campaign that still include the names of Senator [Elizabeth] Warren, Senator Corey Booker and Secretary Tom Perez.”
King said her personal favorite is Booker from New Jersey. She also says announcing her pick in Florida sends a strong message to voters in one of the largest swing states in the country.
