Child advocates are pushing for changes in the way Florida law treats kids in welfare and the state’s juvenile justice system. Lynn Hatter reports the Children’s Campaign of Florida rolled out varying proposals Friday.

Voters will decide whether to place victims’ rights in the Florida Constitution this November. Advocates say it’s necessary to give victims a voice in the criminal justice process. But opponents argue these rights already exist under Florida law. Shawn Mulcahy reports.

Florida wildlife officials have reported continued elevated levels of the organism Karenia Brevis along the state’s Gulf coast.  That’s creating toxic red tide algae blooms from Pinellas County south to Collier County.  The blooms kill marine life and cause respiratory issues for people.  Richard Stumpf (Stump-ff) is an algal bloom researcher with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.  WUSF’s Jessica Meszaros spoke with him about the red tide bloom that’s been persisting on the state’s west coast for months.

That was WUSF’s Jessica Meszaros speaking with NOAA’s Richard Stumpf.

A new law will take effect Monday, seeking to make sure Florida animal shelters return pets to their owners following a storm. As Sascha Cordner reports, it also seeks to crack down on animal abusers.

The death of George Sheldon after a fall last month shocked many who’d worked with him during his long career in Florida government.  They remembered him at a gathering last week in Tampa, as we hear from Margie Menzel.
