Cheektowaga Police ask public's help on fatal crash

Cheektowaga Police are continuing their investigation into an early Monday morning traffic accident that proved fatal to a Buffalo teen.

Investigators have released more details, saying a 2012 Chevy Malibu was westbound on Walden Avenue just after 3:45 a.m. at a high rate of speed when it sideswiped a parked car and spun out of control, striking a utility pole on Walden at Hoerner Avenue. The car then hit a building at 1096 Walden, causing significant damage.

Leena Velez, 17, was ejected from the moving vehicle and died from her injuries later that morning at Erie County Medical Center. Another passenger, a 30-year-old male, was treated for minor injuries at ECMC and released.

The driver, Mkaipa Muya, 21, of Buffalo faces multiple charges, including aggravated vehicular homicide, and is being held on bail pending a felony hearing.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to contact Cheektowaga Police at 686-3580.
