The investigation continues into a large two alarm fire Monday at the Lexington Ice Center. The fire gutted rink two, which sits behind the larger facility. No one suffered serious injury.
Lexington Fire Battalion Chief Jordan Saas said more than a third of firefighters in the department assisted at the scene. He noted arson is just one item to consider with this type of fire. “I don’t like using the term arson investigation because that implies that there might be arson. Well, maybe it is, maybe it isn’t, but ultimately a neutral investigation, an objective investigation will take place by a certified and trained arson investigator or a fire investigator in order to determine the origin and cause,” said Saas.
Saas noted some 30 fire units and 60 firefighters were called to the scene off Eureka Springs Drive. But, that large of a contingent of firefighting personnel did not remain onsite for a long period of time. “Now, that’s only for a limited time. Ultimately just to get the incident under control. As soon as the incident is under control. It automatically and very quickly goes back down to a single alarm response. That way the response coverage can go back to normal and we can ensure the rest of Fayette County is protected,” explained Saas.
Saas said it’s difficult to predict how long the investigation will take. Representatives of the Ice Center offered a statement on FaceBook calling for patience as they work on rebuilding the second rink.
