The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health has tracked the health of thousands of firefighters and found cancer rates are much higher for this group than the general population. Recently, the Florida House and Senate approved a bill that would expand healthcare benefits for firefighters who are diagnosed with 21 types of cancer. The bill’s author Rep. Matt Willhite, a Wellington Democrat and a firefighter, joined Sundial to talk about the bill. It is awaiting a signature from Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

Dr. Jennifer Francis is a climate change researcher at the Woods Hole Research Facility in Massachusetts. Her research focuses on the intensification of hurricanes caused by polar ice caps. She will be speaking at Books & Books Tuesday night in Coral Gables at 8 p.m. Dr. Francis joined Sundial to talk about her research.

The new musical "Viva La Parranda!” reveals the story of a small folkloric Afro-Caribbean band that emerged in the midst of violence. It takes place in a remote village nestled in the jungle of Venezuela called El Clavo. In the musical, lead singer Betsayda Machado and the band, Parranda El Clavo, teach the audience about the significance of the Afro-Venezuelan tradition “La Parranda,” which the band describes as carolling. It is running at the Colony Theatre Miami Beach until May 19.
