Marissa Alexander Trial Set For March, Bond Hearing Next Week

At her first court appearance since a judge ruled for a retrial, this morning it was announced that Marissa Alexander will stand trial again in March for attempted murder and a bail hearing is scheduled for Friday, October 8.

Supporters from across the state rallied outside the courthouse during the hearing.

"It's about Marissa, but it's also about all women who are victimized by their spouses, and by the system," said Marcia Olivo of Sisterhood of Survivors, a Miami-based domestic violence awareness group.

Alexander was sentenced to a state minimum of 20 years after being convicted for firing a warning shot while being confronted by her allegedly abusive husband.

In September, an appeals court threw out her conviction saying the judge’s instructions to the jury regarding her self-defense claim was improper.
