There's a hidden industry on the Miami River that takes things South Floridians discard to Haiti, where they find new life. In a recent Harper's Magazine piece called, "Downstream: The afterlife of American junk," by reporter Rowan Moore Gerety explores the shipping industry, the role it plays in Haiti and how the South Florida's Haitian diaspora is reacting to it. He talked about his reporting with Luis Hernandez on Sundial.
Federal law requires prisons and jails to provide medical care to people who are incarcerated. In a medical journal, South Florida researchers have made the case that too many inmates in the state die in part because "they lack adequate access to timely (health) care." A recent example in the news was that of a a pregnant woman with a mental illness that delivered her child alone in a Broward County jail cell. Dr. Tanya Zakrison, a former trauma surgeon at Jackson Memorial Hospital and one of the researchers, joined Sundial to talk about the team’s findings.

Last weekend, an all-inclusive resort in Key Largo called Bungalows suffered a massive fire. Residents are worried that this fire might have an economic impact on to Key Largo. The Miami Herald’s David Goodhue covered the story and joined Sundial to give an update on this and other Florida Keys stories.
