Scattered Power Outages Remain In Jacksonville After Elsa

Jul 7, 2021

Utilities are responding to power outages caused by Tropical Storm Elsa.

As of 10 a.m. Thursday, 74 JEA customers remained without power.

As of 12:20 a.m. Thursday, more than 3,200 JEA customers had remained without power, including in the Southside neighborhoods where a tornado was confirmed to have touched down Wednesday evening.

As of 3:33 p.m. on Wednesday there were five power outages reported in Jacksonville by JEA affecting 135 customers.

At 11 a.m. three power outages affecting 56 customers were reported by JEA. By 12:25 p.m. JEA reported one outage affecting fewer than five customers before the number of outages increased again later in the afternoon.

As of 6 a.m. Wednesday, about 26,000 Floridians had lost electricity because of the storm. But Gov. Ron DeSantis said during a morning news conference that the outlook was much improved from earlier forecasts that showed the system gaining strength as it moved from the Caribbean through the Gulf of Mexico.

“I think one of the things we're going to be looking at in the days ahead is, what's that (the storm) going to do for the rivers and some of the flood risks,” DeSantis said during the news conference at the state Emergency Operations Center. “That area of Florida has been very saturated. So, we're watching that. But by and large, I think, you know, looking at where we were two days ago, we probably fared better than we thought we would.”

JEA CEO Jay Stowe told WJCT News partner News4Jax Wednesday that all reported outages will be addressed, but there’s an order to how JEA restores services, so customers might need to be patient.

“We focus on critical infrastructure areas - hospitals, wastewater facilities - to keep the foundational services moving for our customers. After that we move through the largest areas where we can turn on the most people the most quickly, and then we move to smaller areas,” Stowe said. “Once you call in and report the outage, then it’s in our system, and we will respond as quickly as we can. We ask for patience as we work through this.”

JEA customers can report power outages online at jea.com or by calling 904-665-6000. Other area power companies can be contacted via the following websites:
