Capital Report: January 9, 2024

Florida’s 2024 lawmaking session got underway amid a massive storm that spawned tornadoes and wreaked havoc on small communities in the Panhandle and Big Bend. Margie Menzel reports the situation also meant a double appearance for Governor DeSantis, both at the Florida Capitol and at the state’s Emergency Operations Center.

Governor Ron DeSantis’s State of the State speech mostly recounted past successes and, as Lynn Hatter explained to Tom Flanigan, didn’t have much in the way of new priorities for lawmakers this session.

Florida Democrats had a lot to say about Gov. Ron DeSantis’ State of the State speech yesterday, but none of it was positive. Tristan Wood reports that the state’s minority party believes DeSantis’ address avoided important issues that may be inconvenient for his Presidential run.

House Speaker Paul Renner and Senate President Kathleen Passidomo are cosigning on one another’s legislative priorities. Regan McCarthy reports during Tuesday’s opening session the leaders highlighted plans to address healthcare, education and the environment.
