Capital Report: January 12, 2024

Monday is decision day in Iowa as that state holds its presidential caucuses. Governor Ron DeSantis has been hoping to make a strong showing, but Lynn Hatter tells Tom Flanigan most of the indicators aren’t leaning in the governor’s direction.

The Leon County Sheriff’s Office recently arrested more than a dozen people for human trafficking, online exploitation of children, and solicitation of prostitution. The arrests are part of a months-long operation. Margie Menzel reports the agency made its announcement at the start of National Human Trafficking Awareness Month.

WMNF’s Shaun Kinane (kin-ANN) has been following some of the bills being teed up in the Florida Legislature that could impose more restrictions relating to the state’s LGBTQ population.

In recent years, Florida lawmakers have steadily imposed new limits on what city and county governments in the state can and can’t do. Tristan Wood reports the trend continues this year with a bill that restricts local governments from placing work regulations on outside contractors.

Residents in Bay County are working to bounce back from a severe storm earlier this week that left hundreds without shelter. On Wednesday, Adrian Andrews visited the area just 24 hours after multiple tornadoes ripped through it, and other parts of the Florida Panhandle.
