Capital Report: May 2, 2025

Florida’s legislative session is ending today, but lawmakers will be back in Tallahassee soon. The two legislative chambers have not yet come to an agreement on the budget. Tristan Wood reports some political watchers say the situation is a stark departure from recent history.

State Senator Jason Pizzo, the Democratic leader in Florida’s Senate, made waves by announcing he’s leaving the party to register as an independent late last month. In a speech on the Senate floor, Pizzo declared the party “dead” and compared today’s bipartisanship to “the fall of Rome.” WLRN’s Carlton Gillespie spoke with him about the party’s future and his next move.
