Capital Report: October 31, 2025

Florida school districts are dealing with declining enrollment and less funding. In Leon County, home of the state capital, the district’s operating reserves are down to the minimum allowable amount required by state law. And the possibility of closing or consolidating schools has come up, as it has in other districts like Broward and Duval.

According to the Florida Department of Health, the state relies on over 150,000 seasonal workers every year. And the fallout from immigration arrests is putting a strain on businesses in small communities. WGCU’s Elizabeth Andarge spoke to several southwest Florida business owners who are finding it difficult to bring in customers and new employees.
