Capital Report: December 26, 2025

After two died and several others were injured this past April in a shooting on Florida State University’s Campus, members of the FSU community were left shaken by the events. Regan McCarthy takes us back to just days following the incident as some students prepared to head back to the classroom.

The Florida Department of Health is moving forward with plans to remove child vaccine requirements for Hepatitis B, chickenpox and several other vaccines. It’s part of a push from Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and state Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo to end all vaccine requirements in the state. Tristan Wood has been following the issue since

Florida’s approval of a bear hunt this year brought great controversy and strong feelings on both sides. The three-week hunt approved by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission ends December 28th. It’s the first such hunt since 2015, when hundreds of bears were killed in just two days, leading the state to quickly shut it down. The state awarded just 172 permits for this year’s hunt. Before it received final approval, we covered this topic on the WFSU podcast Speaking Of. Gina Jordan brings us some of what aired in that July episode.
That was Margie Menzel and Gina Jordan in July previewing the bear hunt that is happening now in Florida.

This year we’ve seen folks across the country repeatedly exercise their right to peaceably assemble—often to protest policies from the Trump administration. Regan McCarthy was at one such protest in June when Thousands of people gathered outside the state Capitol building for a so-called No Kings Protest. Participants decried President Donald Trump and his administration, whose practices, some say, reflect those of a would-be king or dictator. The rally took place on the same day as similar gatherings across the state and throughout the country, and hours before a Washington D.C. military parade requested by Trump that was in conjunction with his 79th birthday.
