City council approves Four Seasons development; Smart North Florida; Day of remembrance; Cathedral districts; What’s good Wednesdays

Jaguars owner Shad Khan sailed through a City Council vote last night to approve $114 million dollars in taxpayer money to help build a Four Seasons luxury hotel and some other developments near Jaguars stadium.

Smart North Florida

Smart North Florida introduced new leadership and outlined plans to advance its smart cities initiatives throughout the region. They hope to use technology and innovation to help solve all kinds of urban issues from potholes to waste management and the digital divide.

Day of remembrance

This weekend, the names of those lost to COVID-19 will fly high on flags strung above a historic baseball park. The Jacksonville COVID Taskforce will host aDay of Remembrance, Hope, and Unity this Sunday at the historic James P. Smalls Park.

Cathedral district

Jacksonville's Cathedral District is gearing up for another festive season this year. The holiday light show and self-guided tour through the historic neighborhood begin in December. Meanwhile, there's a big event to kick off the season coming up in just a few weeks.

What’s good Wednesday

  • This weekend, celebrate fall with a relaxing afternoon in nature alongside your favorite human and canine friends. The pet-loving public can explore the Jacksonville Arboretum’s natural wonders with guided trail hikes with master naturalists while enjoying signature Tito’s “puptails,” food trucks and live music by 7th Street band. Tails and Trails is this Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. Tickets are $10.
  • First Coast No More Homeless Pets has a new CEO. Jennifer Barker says the group is going strong in the pandemic and continuing to help clients pay for veterinary bills and spay and neuter services. Volunteers are encouraged to apply, and donations are always appreciated.
  • The Jacksonville Jazz Society presents Live Music: Jazz on the Green this Saturday at the Eagle Landing Clubhouse in Orange Park from 3 to 7 p.m. Bring your own chairs, food and beverages to this free event.
  • The Ximenez-Fatio House, built in 1798, offers Twilight Tours every Friday and Saturday evening in October through the first weekend in November. This year’s theme is “Fatale Folklore.” Reservations are required.
