Early voting has begun across Duval County, but Florida keeps on making it harder for some individuals to cast a ballot — thanks in part to a few new bills passed by the Florida Legislature.

Under Senate Bill 90, passed in 2021, everyone who requested a Vote By Mail ballot before the 2022 general election had their request expire after that election.

Senate Bill 7050, which is currently in the state Legislature, will make it harder for outside voter organizations to register people to vote.

We talked with Larry Hannan, communications director for State Voices Florida, about these and other changes.

Phoenix Arts District

Future of Cities Founder Tony Cho on his big plans for the Phoenix Arts District in Springfield and the Eastside.

He calls it regenerative placemaking: a design approach that maximizes sustainable building practices, biophilic design (integrating nature), and embraces the assets of a region — in this case the Emerald Trail — to unlock a more equitable future.

The result will be a district offering affordable housing, business and innovation opportunities, infrastructure for sustainable food options and a better quality of life through wellness, culture, and harmony.
