Donna Deegan talks with longtime community advocate Eunice Barnum after the election on Tuesday, May 16, 2023. Barnum is president of the Sherwood Forest/Paradise Park Community Association and one of 10 residents who sued Jacksonville over redistricting maps.

Donna Deegan will make history as Jacksonville's first female mayor, and she's making national news now.

Deegan, the charity founder and former TV anchor, defeated Jax Chamber Ceo Daniel Davis, 52% to 48%, in the runoff election Tuesday.

Deegan framed herself as a voice of opposition who will clean up what she calls a culture of corruption in city government and bring in those who have historically been “left behind” when it comes to economic development. Her priorities are infrastructure, public health and small business.

Today, Mayor-elect Deegan joined us in the studio with more about her victory and her vision for Jacksonville.

The United Soccer League franchise group that is bringing men’s and women’s professional soccer to our area announced Tuesday that Jacksonville will be among the initial markets to join USL Super League — putting the highest level of women’s pro soccer on the First Coast.

This marks a historic first in women’s professional sports locally. The team will be the second major league sports franchise in the region, alongside the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Tony Allegretti of JAXUSLjoined us with more details.
