The 63rd anniversary of Ax Handle Saturday was Sunday. This was a violent, racist attack on Black people that happened in Hemming Park, which is now James Weldon Johnson Park. Rodney Hurst, was 16-year-old at the time and president of the NAACP Youth Council. He helped lead the sit-ins that day and is the author of It Was Never About a Hotdog and a Coke!, a memoir about the day’s events.
