Housing costs, not crime, are public's top concern

The University of North Florida’s Public Opinion Research Lab finds longstanding concerns about crime have been displaced by worries about housing costs. The public opinion poll released Tuesday morning also found broad support for adding City Hall to the list of buildings where people are prohibited from carrying concealed weapons. We ask a UNF political science professor what the results tell us about how the First Coast is thinking about and reacting to political trends.

Guest:

  • ‭Sean Freeder, assistant professor of political science at the University of North Florida.

Then, with the state banning fluoride additives to local water supplies and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration planning to ban prescription fluoride supplements for kids, we ask a local dental expert what health care providers expect to see and how patients and parents can prepare.

Guest:

  • James L. Rutkowski, director of the Comprehensive Oral Implantology Program at Jacksonville University Brooks Rehabilitation College of Healthcare Sciences.

And, “Save Water, Drink Beer!” is the tempting mantra of the St. Johns Riverkeeper’s upcoming fundraiser. As the local nonprofit celebrates 25 years of environmental stewardship, more than 25 breweries throughout the St. Johns watershed are offering “taps for the St. Johns,” allowing beer lovers and Riverkeeper supporters from Mount Dora to Fruit Cove to trade cold brews for prizes and chances to win a raffle. Participating breweries will designate a beer during the fundraiser June 1 to July 31, and donate a percentage of its sales.

Guests:

  • Dryden Mills, community engagement specialist with Riverkeeper.
  • Ray Whaley, co-owner of 2nd Bay Brewing in Fruit Cove.
