Election Q&A
Just two weeks from now, the consequential midterm elections take place in the shadow of newly gerrymandered districts, violent political rhetoric, questions about free speech in campaign ads and fears of election interference. We sit down with elections supervisors from Duval and Clay counties to discuss how they are addressing election concerns and what they are doing to prepare both their staff and voters for Nov. 3. We also ask what voters need to know in terms of timelines, guidelines and resources, and take listener calls and questions on election-related topics. Join the conversation on air by calling 904-549-2937, email comments and questions to firstcoastconnect@wjct.org or go to firstcoastconnect.org to connect with us on social media. First Coast Connect is covering a range of local races and election-related topics between now and Nov. 3. You can find all of our election coverage here, and you can find detailed information about upcoming races in the Jacksonville Today voter guide.
Guests:

'First Lady' parts
A pastor’s wife at a fictional Black megachurch is sexy, profane and hiding a deep family secret. She’s also a perfect comic heroine, taking on repressive religious traditions and entrenched patriarchy with irreverent charm. The True Confessions of First Lady Freeman is the second fictional foray of Jacksonville native and Stanton College Prep grad Deesha Philyaw. Her short story collection, The Secret Lives of Church Ladies, earned the 2021 PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction and was a finalist for the 2020 National Book Award for Fiction. Her new book, released just last month, is already a national bestseller, an “Oprah Daily” Best Books of Fall 2026 selection, a New York Times Editor's Pick and No. 1 on People’s Must-Read Books of Fall 2026 list. We ask her what it feels like to invite readers to the barbecue of some of society’s most sacred cows.
