The Florida State University Seminoles will face the Auburn University Tigers next month for the final Bowl Championship Series title game, and could the Jags make the playoffs?First Coast Connect regular sports analyst Cole Pepper joined the show as he does most Mondays with a look at the bowl schedule and the Jaguars (slim) playoff chances.
FSU vs. Auburn for BCS title, Gator Bowl set
"This has been sort of a foregone conclusion in a lot of ways for Florida State," Pepper told Melissa.
Will it be the eighth straight national title for the Southeastern Conference or can FSU finish off the perfect season?
Auburn will be trying to keep the string of victories alive, but Pepper expects that record to be snapped by FSU. The Seminoles lead all teams in scoring this season.
Closer to home, the University of Nebraska–Lincoln Cornhuskers will take on the University of Georgia Bulldogs in the Gator Bowl at Everbank Field on New Years Day.
The "Dawgs" beat the University of Florida Gators 23-20 in the annual Florida-Georgia Game last month.
"Who wouldn't want to be in Jacksonville versus Lincoln this time of year?" Pepper said, noting that Huskers fans are known to travel far and wide for big games.
Many fans from Georgia and local Georgia fans will also likely be in attendance.
Jaguars Still In Hunt For A Playoff Spot
The Jaguars, after winning on Thursday night, are now 4-9 on the season. They have won three straight and are still in playoff contention, mathematically!
If the Jaguars win out (and they could, with games against Buffalo, Tennessee and the Colts remaining on the schedule), they would have to have just about everything go their way.
Who would have thought after an 0-8 start that the Jaguars would still be mathematically alive while we were Christmas shopping? If the Jaguars win out, Gus Bradley should get some consideration for Coach of the Year.
High School Football
Saturday in Orlando, Trinity Christian won the state 3A title and Bolles lost to the No. 1 team in the country, Miami's Booker T Washington.
Bolles did score more points against Washington than any team did all year.
This weekend, its Clay HS facing Plantation American Heritage in the 5A state championship game. American Heritage scored 60 on Bolles this year.
Kansas v. Florida
On the college basketball front, Florida hosts Kansas tomorrow evening in Gainesville. Kansas features Andrew Wiggins, roundly considered the best pro prospect since LeBron James.
