Mayor Lenny Curry and the Jacksonville Sports Council announced Wednesday afternoon the U.S. Naval Academy’s 2016 home game against Notre Dame will take place next year at EverBank Field.
In even years, when the Navy is the home team, the Notre Dame football game is moved to a neutral site due to large crowds. Next year, the Navy will host the Fighting Irish at EverBank Field.
As thunder boomed in the stadium, Chairman of the Jacksonville Sports Council Carl Cannon made the announcement.
“I’m honored to be here today to formally announce that the Jax Sports Council and the city of Jacksonville have been awarded the 2016 Navy Notre Dame football game,” Cannon announced.
Naval Academy Athletic Director Chet Gladchuck said the Navy will be ready for the upcoming game.
Gladchuck said, “We’ll bring the audience. We’ll bring the enthusiasm. We’ll bring the energy. We’ll bring the sizzle. We’ll bring the juice. [The game] will be a lot of fun.”
Mayor Lenny Curry also expressed his excitement to host this game in Jacksonville.
Curry said, “I love the military, I love Jacksonville, and I really, really love football.”
The game will be nationally televised on November 5th 2016.
