Jacksonville, Baltimore Face Off To Raise Money For Animal Shelters

The Jacksonville Humane Society is challenging the city of Baltimore to see which community can raise more money for their hometown animal shelter by the end of this month.

The NFL football team of the losing city will donate $5,000 dollars to the winning city’s shelter.

Amy Pierce with Jacksonville Humane Society says it’s on.

Pierce is confident Jacksonville will win. She said, “Come on, Jacksonville is going to rock this.”

If Jacksonville raises more than the people of Baltimore, the Ravens will give the Jacksonville Humane Society $5,000. But if Jacksonville loses, Pierce said, “the Jaguars have to make a donation to the Maryland SPCA.”

Pierce says Jacksonville needs that money.

“It’s been a slightly difficult year for us,” she said. “We had to close down our thrift store, and so that was a pretty substantial amount of income that we got every year from thrift store sales.”

She says the Jacksonville Humane Society houses about 6,000 animals a year.

But humans can benefit from the contest too. With every $25 donation, donors are eligible to win two tickets to see the Jaguars play the Ravens in Maryland.

“They get a flight up there, a hotel night at the team hotel and they get to watch the Jaguars beat Baltimore. So what is better than that?” Pierce said.

The contest runs through the end of the month. Donations can be made online or with a phone call to the Humane Society.
