The primary March For Our Lives event is happening in Washington D.C. on Saturday, March 24, but there are also more than 830 marches scheduled worldwide to demand stricter gun control laws and an end to gun violence.
Students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High, where 17 students and teachers died on Feb. 14 as result of a mass shooting, are leading voices behind the protest. Not surprisingly, one of the biggest marches expected in Florida will happen in their town, Parkland.
However, not everyone is happy with the march as a solution. At a this week’s city commission meeting, Parkland resident Adam Cohen raised concerns about political special interests possibly influencing the march.
“Not all of us support the march. Not all of us believe in what it is,” Cohen said. “And for the record, it’s not organized. It’s not sponsored by students and residents.”
Parkland’s march will be starting with a rally at Pine Trails Park at 10 a.m. Saturday. Here's what you need to know if you plan on attending:
- The march route stretches two miles to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, where the mass shooting took place.
- Marchers are asked not to bring bags of any kind.
- Parking will only be available off-site, at Florida Atlantic University parking garages 1,2 and 3 in Boca Raton, Coral Springs City Hall, and Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale.
- There will be shuttles from parking locations to Pine Trails Park.
- Parkland is expecting significant road closures, city-wide.
The ride-share company, Lyft, is offering free rides for Parkland march attendees, but you must register to receive a code for eligibility.
