So a scientist walks into a bar...and shares their knowledge over a beer.
Starting Monday, April 23, Tampa-area scientists will be at local breweries, sharing beer and conversation as part of the Taste of Science conference series.
Taste of Science started with a group of Tampa researchers around 2010. In the following years, the festival expanded to other cities across the country. It's presented now by Scientist Inc.
“The idea behind the festival was that the organizers were sort of recognizing the growing gap between the truth behind what scientists do in their field and the public’s perception of what they do,” said Shannon Grogan, Tampa city coordinator of the Taste of Science.
The event encourages non-scientists to communicate and learn more about the research scientists are doing. The hope is that the casual atmosphere of a bar will bring out both relaxed and productive conversation between audience members and the presenters.
“Taste of Science was created so that anyone could come and have a direct, informal, fun interaction with a scientist and find out more about topics they may be interested in, but are just sort of hesitant to ask about the subject to scientists,” Grogan said.
The Taste of Science continues until Saturday, April 28. Information about event locations, ticket reservations, and parking is available on the group's website.
