When most people hear the phrase “computer hacking,” they think of someone trying to do harm. But the National Day of Civil Hacking aims to help solve community problems.
Code for Tampa Bay Brigade is looking for local government officials and service organizations to submit project ideas to be included in this year’s event on August 11.
Code for America runs the annual nationwide gathering, which pairs civic-minded “techies” with community organizers in order to create innovative solutions to local problems.
“People are coming up with solutions from everything to emergency services, to education and health, social welfare and elections,” said Terri Willingham, Tampa Bay Brigade leader. “All the systems that make our communities run, and run effectively.”
Willingham encourages people submitting ideas to include the critical elements listed in the online form.
“It’s really important when people want to have these projects done, that they have to have clear objectives about what they’re trying to achieve,” said Willingham. “If we don’t have the appropriate data and the things that our coders and developers need to create solutions, we can’t create solutions.”
Code for Tampa Bay is planning to host events August 11 in both Pinellas and Hillsborough counties.
To have a project considered, visit codefortampabay.org/ndch-2018 to complete the project challenge form by June 22. Selected projects will be announced by July 2.
