400 families received a box of free food Wednesday during the Leon County Sheriff’s Office Farm Share event Wednesday morning.
The Leon County Sheriff’s Office received 16 thousand pounds of food to give away for their Farm Share event, but still had to turn away people once the food ran out. Executive Director of Community and Media Relations Shonda Knight says the Sheriff’s Office is working to get more food for the next event, since turnout exceeded expectations this time. The goal is to help community members meet law enforcement in a positive situation while also helping those who don’t have access to healthy food.
“It was 16,000 pounds of food,” said Knight. “There was enough food to feed 400 families and we were completely out of food by the end of the distribution. So much so that there was a bulk of the line that we unfortunately had to turn away so we’re looking to expand our resources even more to meet as many of those needs as we can.”
Knight says the turnout of volunteers for the event was the biggest yet, with increased showings from within the Sheriff’s Office, but also from a number of local organizations.
