Leon County is honoring its first black female commissioner next month in a dedication ceremony. A local park will now be renamed in Anita Davis’ honor.
In 1990, Anita Davis was first elected to serve as a Leon County Commissioner. According to the current commissioners, she was instrumental in helping to build new ball parks in the community, creating another library branch in Southside, and a health clinic.
Davis also helped restore Lake Henrietta, which is why the Leon County Commission unanimously agreed in May to rename the park.
“As a District 1 Commissioner successor of Ms. Davis, I just want to note that her service, her name, her generosity certainly extends well beyond a county commissioner,” said Leon County Commissioner Bill Proctor, at the time.
In honor of Davis, the park will now be called the Anita L. Davis Preserve at Lake Henrietta Park.
The dedication will take place October 3rd at 9:15 a.m. at the park on Springhill Road.
