MIAMI HERALD

Haiti has one of the highest rates of cervical cancer. In a country of more than 11 million people, there is no proper treatment for cancerous diseases. By the time a woman in Haiti realizes she has cervical cancer, it’s often too late. Miami Herald Reporter Jacqueline Charles recently published an investigative piece looking at Haiti's lack of medical personnel and equipment to treat cancer patients. She joined Sundial to share and explain her reporting.

Listen to today's show.

Next, we take a closer look at the race for agricultural commissioner between Republican state Rep. Matt Caldwell and Democrat candidate Nicole “Nikki” Fried. Last Tuesday, Nov. 6, Caldwell was called the winner but the vote differential was so small that the race was sent to an automatic recount. The recount deadline for three Florida statewide races for governor, U.S. Senate and agriculture commissioner was at 3 p.m. on Nov. 15. We spoke with Caldwell on Tuesday. He filed a lawsuit against the Broward County Supervisor of Elections for failing to produce documents that show all votes were received prior to the 7 p.m. deadline on Election Day. Today, former Congressman Patrick Murphy, who’s leading the transition team for the Fried campaign joined Sundial to talk about the recount. Fried was unavailable to join us for this conversation.

Finally, Sundial’s football series continues.

New York Times writer Mark Leibovich has a new book: “The Big Game: The NFL in Dangerous Times," looking at concussions, brain injuries and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). He joined Sundial to talk about how the National Football League is treating the issue of concussions.

Diana Brett is a South Florida mother whose son lived for football. Her son, Daniel Brett ,started playing the game in Pop Warner leagues. He dreamed of playing at the University of Miami, but on the very first day of high school practice he suffered a concussion. His mother, Diana learned eventually that her son Daniel may have suffered from more than a dozen concussions in his years playing youth football. Two years after doctor appointment and treatments, Daniel took his life on May 14, 2011. Diana joined Sundial to share Daniel’s story.
