The Key Marco Cat Goes on Display at New Exhibit

In 1896, a six-inch-tall wooden artifact was unearthed on present-day Marco Island. The carved statue was calledthe Key Marco Catwhen it was discovered to be a piece of Pre-Columbian Native American art. As part of its collection, theSmithsonian Institutionconsiders the artifact to be one of the finest pieces of art in North America. The Key Marco Cat has been returned to its original home, as it and other similar artifacts are going to be collectively featured in an exhibit at theMarco Island Historical Society.Austin Bell, the society's curator of collections, joins us in the studio to learn more about the exhibit and the Key Marco Cat.

Julie Glenn is the host of Gulf Coast Live. She has been working in southwest Florida as a freelance writer since 2007, most recently as a regular columnist for the Naples Daily News. She began her broadcasting career in 1993 as a reporter/anchor/producer for a local CBS affiliate in Quincy, Illinois. After also working for the NBC affiliate, she decided to move to Parma, Italy where she earned her Master’s degree in communication from the University of Gastronomic Sciences. Her undergraduate degree in Mass Communication is from the University of Missouri at Kansas City.
