Murals have been popping up in Haines City since January as part of an interactive art program where the public can “try on” some wings.
The Community Redevelopment Agency created the program, Haines City WINGS, where artists have painted eight life-size murals of angel and butterfly wings.
People are able to take pictures with the colorful art, which is also intended to bring attention to the city’s heritage.
Featured artist Colette Miller has been painting wings around the world since she created the Global Angel Wings Project in 2012.
“The wings affect the communities, each time uniquely. That has been part of the gift of this project,” said Miller.
In Juarez, Mexico, Miller visited a community suffering from drug cartel violence. In Kenya, she painted wings with kids who lived on the streets. She even painted her wings on windows of the 124th and 125th floors of Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world.
The Los Angeles-based artist hopes her paintings will bring communities together and provide a sense of ownership for residents.
Local officials would like the project to do the same for them by creating something for residents to celebrate.
“It allows people to visualize Haines City as a new, up-and-coming arts community,” said Deric Feacher, city manager.
Miller will visit Haines City March 7-9 to paint an original mural for her Global Angel Wings Project. There will be an unveiling and reception at Lake Eva Park on March 8 from 6-9 p.m.
