Florida State University’s legendary football coach, Bobby Bowden, is once again backing President Donald Trump’s re-election bid. Bowden initially endorsed Trump four years ago, even appearing alongside him at a rally in Tallahassee.
In a letter outlining why he supports the President, Bowden said, “The one thing that all of us parents and grandparents can do for our children and grandchildren in these next couple of weeks is vote. We have to get out and vote for President Trump because re-electing him is our only chance to leave the next generation with the same heritage, beliefs, and opportunities that Ann and I had and that many of you had.”
He likened his bout with COVID-19 to the President’s. Both men recently contracted the virus. And Bowden, at 91, said “in many other countries, I might not have even been treated. In America, I was.”
Bowden said he too received the anti-viral medication Remdesivir, which the federal Food and Drug Administration cleared earlier this year to treat the coronavirus. A recent World Health Organization study has cast doubt on the effectiveness of the drug, suggesting it doesn’t help much in recovery; however the results of the WHO report contradict a U.S.-based study from the National Institutes for Health (NIH) showing the drug leads to a shorter recovery time.
“I’ve had the chance to get a lot of wins in my life, but I really wanted to win this one because I wanted to be around to vote for President Trump,” said Bowden, who has talked frequently about his faith and the role it plays in his family and his views.
Bowden retired from coaching at FSU in 2009. During his more than 30 years at the school, he led the Seminoles football team to two national championships, a dozen ACC championships and is among the winningest coaches of all time in Division 1 football.
