Willie Simmons says his son was injured in a shooting that took place early Sunday morning.

Florida A&M University head football coach Willie Simmons says his son was the victim of a shooting that took place on Perry Street just after 3:00 a.m. Sunday morning.

"Our family has been vocal advocates against gun violence in our community and unfortunately the issue has now impacted us on an even more personal level," Simmons said in a statement he sent to ABC 27. "We appreciate your prayers and ask that you give our family time to support our son as he recovers from his injuries. We as a community must work together to ensure that other families do not have to endure the senseless trauma of gun violence we now face."

The Tallahassee Police Department has not named Simmons' son, but says the victim of the shooting is expected to recover.

In a tweet TPD says it is investigating the incident and is asking any witnesses to contact police or Crime Stoppers with any information.
