Observers say the decision could allow opponents to undermine the infrastructure of the Islamist group, which is still protesting the ouster of President Mohammed Morsi this summer.

Saying that the United States is "deeply concerned by the decision of the Egyptian Armed Forces to remove President Morsy and suspend the Egyptian constitution," President Obama calls on Egypt's military to preserve the rights and safety of its citizens.

Egypt's military has played a dominant role in the country since a 1952 military coup. The military reasserted its power as it staged a coup on Wednesday.
